NEWS from Reno Kirtya This year, the Balinese NEW YEAR, “ NYEPI “ – Day of Silence – the Hindu Seclusion Day will fall on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. The great festival of NYEPI marks the celebration of the Balinese solar New Year. It is held at the spring equinox and announces the beginning of spring and the end of rainy season. But more important, it is a ceremony of a special nature, designed to clean out the island and to drive out all the evil spirits by magic curses and other traditional customs. Nyepi itself is a day of complete rest which follows the actual ceremony of purification. No fires, no lights, no work, no cooking are permitted on that day. All activities are stopped on the island and the traffic comes to a complete standstill. All vehicular and pedestrian traffic are severely restricted, except in case of emergency. There will be no tour no transportation available. Guests and anyone on the island should plan to stay within the hotel compounds or their homes for the entire day of March 25, 2020. The government of Bali has also announced that there will be no departure nor arrival flights during that day. The last arrival before Nyepi should be March 24. The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) is gradually completing the construction of the Raja Ampat ring road which has a total length of 342 kilometers. Reporting from setkab.go.id, the Raja Ampat ring road consists of 2 sections, namely the Raja Ampat Outer Ring segment of 314.39 km and the Waisai Ring segment of 27.61 km Of the total length of 342 km, the condition of the Raja Ampat ring road which has been paved 37.45 km, aggregate along 97.75 km, and the remaining 206.8 km not yet open. The construction of the Raja Ampat ring road was constrained because it crossed the 113.6 km nature reserve area, precisely on the Kabare-Kapadri-Wayai section (93.6 km) and the Wayai-Warsambin-Kabare section (20 km). During the 2015-2018 period, the Ministry of PUPR carried out the handling of the 112.9 km Raja Ampat Outer Ring, which included preservation work, road construction, road structure improvement and construction of the Warsawai Bridge (10 meters) and Waimir Bridge (10 meters). Meanwhile in 2019. the Directorate General of Highways has budgeted Rp 183.1 billion for handling the Raja Ampat ring segment. The budget is used for the preservation work of the 6.15 km Waisai-Marinda Airport road and routine maintenance of the bridges on that section. Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono said the availability of road infrastructure with steady conditions will increase the acceleration of the development of local tourist destinations and make it easier for tourists to reach tourist sites. "Improved road access will support the economy of the community in the tourist area," said Minister Basuki reported from setkab.go.id. Previously the Ministry of PUPR had repaired the Port of Waisai on Waigeo Island which was the entrance to tourist destinations in Raja Ampat Regency. As the islands are pretty cut off, it’s important to organise currency before you take the trip. Some hotels will accept credit cards but it’s not something to rely on. Cover up. It’s important to show respect when visiting villages and you’ll see signs reminding you not to wander around in bikinis. I read that Sunday is considered family day for a lot of people (for religious reasons) so avoid this for travelling or taking part in activities. Remember, Raja Ampat isn’t a tourist destination like Bali, so expect the experience to be a little more rough and ready!
